Like Stepping Into a Fairytale -Discovering Finland’s True Sense of Richness for Two Days at The Barö-

Since the pandemic, this series has taken me across Japan in search of retreats, hotels, and places that offer something beyond accommodation—spaces that encourage reflection, stillness, and a different perspective on life. Now, for the first time, this journey extends beyond Japan.
After several intense days covering fashion in Helsinki filled with runway presentations, studio visits, and conversations with designers.
I extended my stay and headed west.
My destination: The Barö, a secluded archipelago hotel offering a glimpse into a side of Finland rarely found in guidebooks.
About an hour from the capital, the urban landscape gradually gives way to forests, rocky coastlines, and open stretches of sea. Then, almost without announcement, The Barö appears. Quietly. Naturally. As if it had always belonged there.

Located in the archipelago region of Inkoo overlooking the Gulf of Finland, The Barö opened in 2021 as an ecological retreat designed to exist in harmony with its surroundings. Rather than imposing itself upon the landscape, the architecture emerges from it. Timber, stone, sea, and sky blend seamlessly, creating a distinctly Nordic atmosphere.

Upon arrival, the overwhelming sensation is silence. Not an empty void, but a different kind of quietness. The rustling of trees. The distant call of birds. The gentle movement of water against the shoreline.
For those accustomed to life in bustling cities like Tokyo or Paris, the experience is almost disorienting. In a world saturated with constant stimulation, true silence has become one of our rarest luxuries. At The Barö, it is everywhere.
The 16 guest rooms continue this dialogue with nature. Sharing a thoughtfully considered design language, each space features large panoramic windows that frame uninterrupted views of the forest and sea, dissolving the boundary between indoors and out. Dark Nordic tones, natural materials, a cozy fireplace, and a private terrace create a sense of understated comfort. Lighting is intentionally restrained, allowing the landscape to remain the focal point.
Mornings begin not with traffic or notifications, but with sunlight filtering through the trees. The effect is subtle yet profound. Here, time seems to move differently.

The restaurant offers a similarly thoughtful interpretation of its locale. Its New Nordic menu celebrates regional ingredients and seasonal rhythms, presenting dishes deeply connected to the environment. Fresh bread, wild berries, organic eggs, and house-smoked salmon arrive without unnecessary embellishment, allowing quality and provenance to speak for themselves. It is not luxury expressed through excess, but through authenticity.

Throughout my stay, one thought returned repeatedly: This feels like stepping into a fairytale. Not because the experience is extravagant. Quite the opposite. It is the simplicity that feels extraordinary. The endless forests. The stillness of the sea. The clarity of the air. The absence of urgency.
Finland consistently ranks among the happiest countries in the world. While happiness is difficult to define, places like The Barö offer compelling clues. Perhaps true richness is not measured by what we accumulate, but by our ability to slow down. To be present. To reconnect with nature and with ourselves.
The Barö embodies this philosophy effortlessly. It does not attempt to explain the Nordic way of life; it simply allows guests to live it.
For those visiting Helsinki, venturing beyond the city limits is highly recommended. Just an hour away lies a landscape that reveals another side of Finland—one shaped not by speed or consumption, but by stillness, nature, and a profound appreciation for life's simplest pleasures.
In that sense, The Barö is more than a hotel. It is an invitation to rediscover what it means to feel truly rich.
