Discovering the Luxury of Doing Nothing in the Heart of Helsinki -Five Days at Hotel St. George-

Set against the backdrop of Finland during what is often considered one of the most beautiful times of the year just before summer I had the chance to experience a truly remarkable stay, one that perfectly reflects the Nordic approach to hospitality, design, and wellbeing. The setting for this story is Hotel St. George, one of Helsinki’s most iconic luxury hotels.
I traveled to Finland to attend Fashion in Helsinki, a city-wide event celebrating fashion, creativity, and design held annually at the end of May. While the trip was anything but a leisurely vacation, it turned out to be an exceptional work stay in the very heart of Helsinki. My days were filled with fashion shows, presentations, designer visits, and factory tours. I found myself constantly moving around the city, yet throughout the entire trip, Hotel St. George remained a reliable and comforting base.

Located directly across from Old Church Park in central Helsinki, Hotel St. George opened in 2018 within a beautifully restored historic building. The hotel is also a member of the prestigious Design Hotels collection. Yet, what makes it special extends far beyond luxury alone.
The moment you step inside, you are greeted by a distinctly Nordic sense of calm and sophistication. A dramatic art installation hangs in the soaring lobby atrium, while contemporary artworks and carefully curated design pieces can be found throughout the property. The atmosphere feels as though the boundaries between hotel and gallery have quietly disappeared.

What impressed me most, however, was the way the hotel balances two seemingly opposite qualities: exceptional accessibility and remarkable tranquility. Almost every venue I needed to visit during Fashion in Helsinki was easily reachable by foot or public transportation. Yet despite being located in the city center, the hotel felt surprisingly peaceful. For a first-time work trip in a foreign country, that balance provided a level of comfort and reassurance I hadn’t anticipated.

For my stay, I checked into the Atelier Room, one of the hotel’s most distinctive room categories. As the name suggests, the room is inspired by an artist’s studio. The first things that catch your attention are the high ceilings and expansive windows. Outside, Helsinki’s cityscape and lush greenery unfold before you, while soft natural light fills the room throughout the day. The space embodies the Nordic aesthetic many of us imagine: minimalist and refined, yet warmed by carefully placed artwork and vibrant accents that prevent it from ever feeling sterile.

The bed was exceptionally comfortable, offering welcome relief after long days spent walking across the city. The spacious bathroom, complete with premium amenities, reflected the meticulous attention to detail expected from a world-class luxury hotel.
What struck me most was that the room functioned as more than simply a place to sleep; it became a space that encouraged creativity. During my stay, I often returned to the room to write articles, organize photographs, or plan upcoming projects. Somehow, concentration came naturally there. Sitting by the window with a cup of coffee while sketching out ideas for future stories became one of the most memorable moments of the trip. Perhaps changing your environment has a way of transforming even the most familiar routines into something new.

Whenever I found a break in my schedule, I made my way down to the hotel’s spa. When people think of Finland, they naturally think of saunas, but the spa at Hotel St. George elevates that experience beyond mere tourism. After spending time in the sauna, I would move to the quiet pool and simply float in the stillness. Looking up at the ceiling, it felt as though the pace of the day gradually drifted away.
I kept asking myself the same question: How can a place this peaceful exist in the middle of the city?
Amid the intensity of Fashion in Helsinki, these moments became essential. The spa offered a chance to reset both body and mind before another demanding day. In Finland, wellbeing is not a trend—it is part of the culture. And nowhere did I feel that more clearly than here.

Another highlight of the stay was breakfast. At first glance, the buffet appears characteristically Nordic in its simplicity, but the quality and variety exceeded all expectations. Fresh fruits and berries, excellent cheeses and cured meats, warm dishes, and above all, outstanding bread the secret lies in the hotel’s beloved St. George Bakery. Popular with both hotel guests and local residents, the bakery fills the space with the aroma of freshly baked bread each morning. During my stay, it never felt like a place designed exclusively for visitors. Instead, it felt like a genuine part of everyday Helsinki life. Sharing the same space as locals while traveling is one of the great pleasures of discovering a new city, and Hotel St. George offers exactly that opportunity.
Luxury hotels are often judged by their interiors, amenities, or level of service. Hotel St. George certainly excels in all of those areas. Yet I believe the true value of this hotel lies elsewhere. It lies in what I often return to throughout this series: space.
Space to pause.
Space to think.
Space to simply exist without feeling the need to be productive every moment of the day.

Throughout a hectic fashion week, Hotel St. George served as the foundation that supported every part of my journey. It offered a place where doing nothing felt completely acceptable a place of remarkable calm in the very center of Helsinki.
I couldn’t have asked for a better hotel to feature as the first international destination in this series. What I found here was more than a memorable stay; it was an experience that reflected the values at the heart of Nordic life itself. And in the end, Hotel St. George was not the protagonist of this journey. It was the perfect partner—one that I hope to return to next year, perhaps for an even busier edition of Fashion in Helsinki.
