深海で灯る光と残像の詩学、ジュリアン・シャリエールによる「Midnight Zone」、8/30（土）までペロタン東京にて開催中
展覧会では、深海映像作品《Midnight Zone》をはじめ、彫刻《A Stone Dream of You》や写真シリーズ《Veils》が展示されており、それぞれが異なるかたちで自然と人間の関係を問いかける。

《Midnight Zone》では、灯台のフレネルレンズがカメラの目となり、魚群や鮫の群れがきらめく水中を深く潜航していく。やがて光が届かぬ“ミッドナイト・ゾーン”に至ると、そこは未発見の生命が潜む、異形の静寂に満ちた世界だ。撮影地は、採掘候補地とされているクラリオン・クリッパートン断裂帯。暗闇を切り裂く灯りは、幻想的であると同時に、収奪の視線を浮かび上がらせる抵抗のジェスチャーでもある。

《A Stone Dream of You》では、海底火山に棲まう未知の生物を想起させるような、黒曜石の球体をまとう彫刻群が展示されている。それらは、生物学、地質学、神話の境界を曖昧にしながら、物質と精神の分離に抵抗するかのように佇み、科学が消し去ろうとしてきた潜在的なアニミズムの気配を漂わせている。

また、《Veils》シリーズでは、死滅したサンゴを顔料とし、石灰岩プレートによる古典的な写真石版技法で制作されたプリントが並ぶ。そこに写るのはサンゴ礁そのもの、そしてそこに刻まれた時間の痕跡だ。像と物質が一体化したその表面には、消失のなかに浮かび上がる記憶の気配が滲む。ここでシャリエールがさらに踏み込んで探求するのは、記録という概念の崩壊と、彼が特定の環境の「残滓」と呼ぶものである。

本展は、単なる自然美の記録ではない。人間の活動によって変容し続ける地球の姿と、その中でいかに私たちが世界に関わり、棲まい、見るのかを問い直す試みだ。深海で瞬く光は、理解の始まりを告げる残像なのかもしれない。
【プロフィール】
ジュリアン・シャリエール
1987年、スイス・モルジュ生まれ。ドイツ・ベルリンを拠点に活動。火山のカルデラや氷原、核実験場など、地球物理学的に際立った場所を舞台とした作品制作を通じて、自然の概念や人間の世界への関わり方を探求。科学者、哲学者、音楽家らとの協働を通じて、多次元的な表現を展開している。
